A hormone secreted by pineal cells

 

Pineal hormone, also known as melatonin, is a hormone secreted by pineal cells. Its chemical structure is 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine. Synthesis and release of pineal hormones

 

Pineal cells absorb tryptophan from blood circulation and convert it into 5-hydroxytryptophan catalyzed by hydroxylase. The latter is decarboxylated to 5-hydroxytryptophan by decarboxylase. There are three possible transformations of 5-hydroxytryptophan: Part of tryptophan is deaminated by monoamine oxidase to 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid; The other leaves pineal cells and is taken up by sympathetic nerve endings and stored with the neurotransmitter noradrenaline. The third part is acetylated by N-acetyl 5-hydroxytryptamine transferase and then O-methoxy by hydroxylated indole-o-methyl transferase to form melatonin. After the synthesis of melatonin, it may be released by cells into the blood circulation or into the blood circulation through the cerebrospinal fluid. Noradrenaline can enhance its synthesis, and its speed depends on the activity of hydroxylase in liver cell microsomes. Under the catalysis of this enzyme, 6-hydroxymelatonin is formed, which is then combined with glucuronic acid and sulfate and excreted through urine.

 

Physiological role of the pineal gland

Clinically, pineal master cell tumor can lead to delayed puberty, while pineal teratoma can be complicated with precocious puberty due to the exclusion of master cells. Ambient light and sympathetic nerves may affect reproductive system function by controlling melatonin synthesis and release in the pineal gland.

 

(4) Relationship with thyroid: administration of melatonin reduces thyroid hormone secretion, which may inhibit thyroid function by inhibiting TRH release in hypothalamus and TSH secretion in pituitary gland.

 

(5) Relationship with the adrenal cortex: melatonin has a strong inhibitory effect on the adrenal cortex. Injecting pineal extract in healthy people can reduce the secretion of aldosterone and the excretion of 17 ketone steroid.

 

⑥ The relationship with pancreatic islets: pineal hormone can lead to reduced blood sugar, increased glucose tolerance.
